In Canadian English, this word typically means:

  1. a baby’s bedroom

  2. a room, often in a public building (e.g. church, community centre, hospital, etc.), where babies are taken care of (outside of hospitals, guardians/parents take care of their babies in nurseries when their babies are fussy, crying, needing to be fed, etc. while attending public events)

  3. a place where young plants are grown and sold

EXAMPLES

  1. (definition 1) “This past weekend my wife and I started putting together the nursery. I built the crib, my wife ordered a rocking chair, and together we bought some baby clothes to fill the closet.”

  2. (definition 2) “During the pastor’s sermon, John’s baby boy started to cry loudly. So, he decided to take him to the nursery to calm him down. Once his baby stopped crying, they both went back to the sanctuary to continue watching the service.”

  3. (definition 3) “The only nursery in town has closed, which is so unfortunate because they had some beautiful plants there: roses, tulips, hydrangeas… They had them all!”

How did you decorate your baby’s nursery? Have you ever taken your baby to a nursery in public? Where was it and what were you doing? Does your town/city have a nursery for plants? Practice using this vocabulary by letting me know in the comment below.
