In Canadian English, this expression typically means:
to be romantically/sexually (and sometimes secretly) attracted to someone who is often unattainable
NOTE
The person that someone has a crush on is considered unattainable for many reasons: they are much older (e.g., a student in a higher grade, an adult, etc.), they are a celebrity, they are an authority figure (e.g., a friend’s parent, teacher/professor, boss, politician, etc.), etc.
EXAMPLES
“When he was 10 years old, he had a friend from Greece. She had curly brown hair and green eyes. She was really funny and imaginative. When she came back from a trip to Australia, she gave him a souvenir of a toy koala. From that moment, he knew that he had a crush on her.”
“She has a crush on Michael B. Jordan. She loves his smile, his kindness, and she thinks that he is a very talented actor.”
