Every third Monday of February is a holiday in Canada called, “Family Day.” This special day of rest is observed by half of the provinces in the country: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, and New Brunswick. For many of the provinces that do not observe Family Day, they have their own holiday on the same day: Louis Riel Day (Manitoba), Heritage Day (Nova Scotia), and Islander Day (Prince Edward Island).

The purpose of Family Day, much like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, is to celebrate family values, spending quality time with one’s family members instead of spending time on school or work. As such, the day is celebrated doing various things: visiting grandparents, watching or playing hockey, watching curling, going skating, going skiing or snowboarding, attending winter festivals like Carnaval (AKA Winter Carnival), watching a movie, playing cards or a board game, having a special dinner, or simply going for a walk or a cup of coffee. There is no real tradition for this day, apart from using it as a day of rest with family for a better work/life balance.

Do you have a holiday similar to Family Day where you live? What do you do on that holiday? Practice your English by letting me know in the comments below.
