In Canadian English, this phrasal verb typically means:

  1. to do again

NOTE

“To do over” has a negative connotation, meaning this phrasal verb is generally used when something is considered not good enough and, therefore, needs to be done again.

In order to add emphasis to the idea that you are doing something over, the adverbs “all” and “again” are often used (i.e., “to do something all over again”).

EXAMPLES

  1. “Unfortunately, the computer crashed, so we lost the file that had our proposal on it. We had no choice but to re-write it, to do it all over again.”

  2. “Sometimes teachers and professors in Canada allow students to do over their completed assignments. This is generally done when it is clear that the student did not understand the instructions for the task.”
